There are many histories of Napoleon and his era.  This one is written by the son of one Napoleon's officers.  This book, based on the emperor's correspondence published in 1858-1870, attempted the destruction of the legends which had grown up around his subject, and sought by a critical examination of the documents to explain the motives of his policy.
The 4th and final volume concluded in December of 1811 as the author passed before any more was translated.
