One of the great ironies of Napoleonic history is that Marshal Michel Ney - a veteran of most of the Empire's great and bloody battles - was killed in peacetime by French musket-balls. Found guilty of treason and executed in Paris later the same morning, the hero of the the Russian Campaign fell victim to both ultra-royalist fervor and to his own, often-impulsive, character.
